Last week’s Maximo Utility Working Group (MUWG) conference virtually brought together hundreds of IBM Maximo users, managers, partners, and employees. Geonexus was a proud sponsor of the conference, where presentations ranged from announcements about new Maximo features and enhancements to user stories from Utility organizations.

With three days packed full of presentations, industry-specific meetings, and vendor chats, it was impossible to leave the conference without learning something new. Read on for our top takeaways from the conference!

Key Takeaways:

The Future of Maximo Asset Management is Here: The Maximo Asset Suite (MAS)

Through several presentations at the conference, the IBM team introduced Maximo Asset Suite (MAS) and its capabilities across Manage, Monitor, Health, Predict, Visual Inspection, Assist, and Safety apps. According to IBM, in addition to having an improved look and feel, MAS also helps users go from reactive maintenance to predictive maintenance – our next takeaway.

Prioritizing Predictive Maintenance

IBM, Maximo users, and vendors all emphasized the importance of “Predictive Maintenance” throughout Fall MUWG. IBM’s Monitor, Predict, and Visual Inspection tools help organizations predict asset health and maintenance needs so they can respond proactively, not reactively. Organizations are embracing the idea of predictive maintenance not just for their business bottom lines, but also for the safety of their assets, employees, and the public.

Off-the-Shelf Tools are Here to Stay

When discussing their chosen mobile asset management solution during a conference lightning talk, Southern Company noted that they “try to stay out-of-the-box as much as possible.” This is nothing new. As we wrote about in our recent blog, productized solutions allow users to avoid version lock down the line, ensure data quality through reporting functionality, and enable citizen integrators within organizations to own the new technology.

Digitize Manual Processes – It’s Time

At Fall MUWG, and in talking to Utility customers, we are always shocked to learn that teams are still using manual processes to track asset data, inspections, etc. Fall MUWG reaffirmed for us the importance of digitizing those manual processes, especially when it comes to asset data. Ultimately, the less human error, the better for business.

Company Buy-In is Key

Several MUWG presentations centered around the implementation of new mobile or asset management adjacent technology. Organizations who spoke about the software implementation process all emphasized the importance of getting team buy-in for the new technologies. As we pointed out in our software implementation blog, getting new technology set-up can be scary, and having key-players throughout the organization on board with the new technology will help team morale and confidence as you implement the tool.
