Peoples is the largest natural gas distribution company in Pennsylvania, providing reliable, low cost natural gas service to approximately 740,000 customers in Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky.
Last Fall, as Peoples’ mobile workforce grew to over 650 users, it became clear that their Esri deployment needed to be redesigned. They had performance issues using one geodatabase, as field users were competing against editors and web users for resources, including replica syncing throughout the day.
The decision was made to move to a two-geodatabase model; leaving one versioned environment for the office users, and one non-versioned environment for the field side. All the while developing a replacement for the mobile runtime environment. To achieve full synchronization between the two geodatabases, Peoples needed a reliable data synchronization tool. To meet this need they implemented GeoWorx® Sync for geodatabase to geodatabase synchronization.
Using GeoWorx Sync, Peoples has been able to significantly increase performance. Both web users and ArcGIS editors are very pleased with the improvements. Through GeoWorx Sync’s reporting tool, they are also able to easily see how much data is being moved around daily and have a permanent record of this information.
After seeing the initial benefits of GeoWorx Sync and what it can do, Peoples plans to find other ways to use it in the future. They are looking at synchronization with ArcGIS Online as well as synchronizing data with their asset management system.
